THE GHOST OF KANNAPOLIS PAST Darryl Hinnant, mayor of Kannapolis, was elected to city council in 2001 and has been mayor of the town since 2013. A recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, Hinnant moved to Kannapolis in 1975 and was a chemist by trade. As a chemist, Hinnant is familiar with both textile and paper mill operations, and said that at a certain point, Cannon Mills — later known as Pillowtex — was one of his biggest customers. At its peak, the Kannapolis mill employed around 25,000 people.
